Hi all, I have auto director all up and running, and loving it, except im having a small problem with the images.

When I add a photo I assume AutoD shrinks the image down to 600px wide, but when I try to add a large image file, around 2megs, it just freezes. Is there any way to allow large files to be added to the listing and let it shrink them down?

the shrink pixel size and thumbnail is set in the admin option of the site (click edit on the left of the top menu next to the name of your site)

but images over 1 or 2 mb will fail - this I think is caused by the limitations of php - the web browser software autodirector is written in. So it isnt really autodirectors fault.

I have tried writing a web based tool to shrink my own images before I import them, and came across the same problem - accessing images on the internet and php sulks when you try to use files over 2mb.

You will have to use a piece of software like an image editor to resize your images first. there are some bulk image resizing products available, but the key is they will run locally on your PC - not over the internet.

unless there is another way to do it then Im all ears too!!

Yeah I've been shrinking them, but it did take me a while to realize what the problem is as it doesn't say anything about image size, it just takes u to a blank page with the admin header, and nothing else

AutoDirector sets an upload limit of 2MB (see the UPLOADSIZELIMIT in autodirector.ini). AutoDirector will try to configure PHP so that limit is used, but it's success will depend on your web host's settings.

However, uploading large files will always be problematical. Even though you may have a 2Mb broadband connection, upload speeds are significantly less - usually around 80% slower. Although you might see a blank page, it's likely that the file's still uploading.

I would recommend that you shrink image files before uploading. Applications such as XnView can batch process hundreds of images at a time. You can reduce the resolution and sharpen every image within minutes.

Adjusting images on your PC before uploading is generally quicker and more efficient than uploading to the server and having it resize there.

Saying that, image uploads could be easier in AutoDirector so we'll be looking at it.
